It's most likely that "Joe" identified himself with McCain's common constituents as opposed to Obama's. That simple. There are political models that support as much. From there, it's just about individuals reasoning to their accepted conclusions resulting from those identifications. Sure, there are those that vote rationally on the issues stemming from self-interest, but most voters don't. Voting is more about social identification than issues.
